Here is an excerpt of Pearl’s contribution to this short-story anthology, sponsored by Sisters in Crime New York Tri-State Chapter.
“What About Henry?”
“I want a divorce, Gertrude.” Henry Kaye hated his wife. He hated her cheeriness in the morning. He hated her perpetual calmness, a trait he had loved her for once because his mother had been a screamer. But that wasn’t why he wanted a divorce.
Gertrude lifted Henry’s head and turned the pillow. “Why?” she asked.
“Because I’m in love with a man.”
She squinted at him with faded blue eyes that betrayed nothing. “Would you like some tea?” She wiped his brow with a cool cloth.
“Didn’t you hear me? I said I want a divorce because I’m seeing a man.”
Yes, dear. I heard you. Don’t raise your voice. Remember, you’re not well, Henry. I’ll make you some tea, dear. Be back in a jif.”
