Song
of Miriam
“Pearl Wolf whose SONG OF MIRIAM
will be out in September from Hilliard and Harris, doesn’t do
anything by halves. Her fantastic launch party was held at the
trendy Midtown restaurant TAO with all the trimmings.
SONG OF MIRIAM, set in Russia during the reign of Catherine the
Great, though not a mystery, is incredible. A great celebration for
a worthy book.”

“Pearl Wolf, who divides her time between
Southampton and New York City and is better known as a mystery
writer, has just published her first historical novel, SONG OF
MIRIAM (Hilliard Harris)
Catherine the Great is about to depart from
St. Petersburg on a 4,000-mile trek to Kiev, the route carefully
sanitized by the nobleman Potemkin. The night before she leaves, he
gives a grand ball at which there is a mysterious dark stranger who
causes a buzz at the royal court. Who is she?
Ms. Wolf lectures nationally on women and the
politics of anti-Semitism in the 18th century.”
—The East Hampton Star, September 11, 2003, P. C6 BOOK
MARKERS
"Miriam and her husband Dov, both still in
their teens, are Jews who decide to take on the Russia of Catherine
the Great, becoming wealthy and infiltrating the aristocracy.
Dov is a financial genius who becomes financial adviser to the Czar;
however, his prowess in bed leaves much to be desired by his wife.
While Dov is busy, Miriam infiltrates the aristocracy in her own
way, in the person of Count Alexei Razovsky, with whom she has a
torrid one-year affair. Unable to marry because of their vast social
and religious differences, tragedy ensues.
Our heroine has a son and some frightening adventures, but she
eventually finds true love. Her husband suffers devastating
anti-Semitic-inspired business reverses.
Plot-driven, this novel is exciting because of its historic
references and constant action. The author has accurately interwoven
the highs and lows of the Jews of Russia in the 18th Century and the
nuances of court politics. Some of the characters are patterned
after historical personalities who figure in the history of that
epoch." Song of Miriam ISBN 1-59133-024-6 300 pp.

“The book rings with truth—emotionally, psychologically and
politically. There are moments of sheer lyric poetry and emotion. I
was completely moved to another time and place. The scenes of
intimacy are unforgettably enticing as well as dignified. An
excellent ‘read’ which drew me into the lives of the people and
their story.”

“The book captures the essence of Jewish life during the reign of
Catherine The great and Alexander I. I found it to be exhilarating,
sad, happy, lustful, plus filled with the tragedies which befell the
Jewish community.”
